Since February 2020, a group of LGBTQ+ employee networks from the Defence industry has been meeting on a monthly basis. We share ideas on how to make our workplaces more LGBTQ+ friendly and we find ways in which we can collaborate to make the collective industry a more inclusive place.
In June, for Pride month, we came together for our first event – a virtual pride celebration! We hosted the event on Zoom and invited staff from across all our organisations to join awareness sessions on Bi and Trans inclusion, play virtual games, see queer talent from across our community performing, and even a live lip-sync (which was a surreal, but very enjoyable experience). The event was a great success and people were really pleased that they were able to still celebrate Pride, even in this strange Covid world.
The next collaboration event will be for Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), where we will be collaborating with the charity Mermaids, who support young gender-diverse individuals. We’ll have a presentation from Mermaids, followed by a panel of Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Fluid individuals from across the Defence industry. In the same week is Pride in STEM, so we’ll also talk about what it’s like for Trans people working in a STEM role/organisation.
In the coming months and years, we hope to continue working together, holding more events (hopefully physically one day), sharing learning and collectively making the Defence industry as LGBTQ+ inclusive as possible.
If you are part of an LGBTQ+ network in a Defence organisation, but aren’t yet a member of Pride in Defence, please contact us via our Twitter page and we can look to include you in the group.
